How to Download X (Twitter) Videos on iPhone to Photos

To save a public X (Twitter) video on iPhone, copy the post link, open TwitterDown in Safari, and download an available MP4. If it lands in Files rather than Photos, open the file and use Share → Save Video when that action is available. No separate downloader app is needed for this browser workflow.

Download a public X video in Safari#

Open the individual post containing the video in X. Use the post's Share menu to copy its link, rather than copying a profile or search-results URL.
Open Safari and visit TwitterDown. If you started inside a social app's embedded browser and downloads do not work, open the same page in Safari.
Paste the post link into the input and start the download lookup.
Choose one of the video qualities actually shown. A higher-resolution option is not available for every post.
Tap its download button. Confirm Safari's download prompt if one appears, then wait for the transfer to finish.
Open the downloaded file and check that it plays before trying to import it into Photos.

A public post can still fail if its media is unavailable, access-restricted, or temporarily unreachable. A page that plays inside your logged-in X app is not proof that a public-link downloader can access it.

Find the video in Files, then save it to Photos#

Safari downloads and the Photos library are separate places. Apple's guide to finding downloads on iPhone explains where to locate downloaded files.

Open Safari's downloads list or the Files app and check the download location you use, such as Downloads in iCloud Drive or On My iPhone. Open the completed MP4, tap Share, and choose Save Video if it appears. Then check Photos. If you selected a different folder when downloading, return to that folder instead of assuming the file was lost.

If tapping the download opens a video preview instead, use the available share or download action to save it to Files first. Menu labels and placement vary with the iOS version and browser. Keep the working file in Files until you have confirmed the Photos copy opens correctly.

Fix the specific step that failed#

The lookup returns no video#

Copy the link again from the actual post. Check that it contains /status/ and a post ID. A profile, screenshot, embedded card, or copied caption is not a video-post link. Confirm the original post still exists and contains supported media. If several public posts fail, the service or X may be experiencing a temporary availability problem; repeated rapid retries are unlikely to help.

The button does nothing or opens another tab#

Try the workflow in Safari rather than an in-app browser. Check whether a download or preview opened in another tab, and allow the transfer to complete on a stable connection. Do not install an unknown browser profile or give a third-party site your X password to make a download work.

The video is missing from Photos#

Look in Files first. Downloading an MP4 does not necessarily import it into Photos. Open it fully before trying Share → Save Video. Check available storage if importing fails. There is no universal fixed amount of free space that works for every video.

Save Video is missing, or playback fails#

Check that the file finished downloading and is a playable video, not a saved error page. An interrupted transfer or unsupported codec can prevent playback or import. Try a fresh download or another available quality. An .mp4 extension alone does not guarantee that every codec inside the file is compatible with Photos.

The clip has no sound or looks blurry#

Compare it with the original post. An animation may have no audio, and an already compressed source cannot become sharper just by downloading it. If the original has sound but the saved file does not, try another available variant and check the device's audio settings.

Quality, storage, and alternative workflows#

Choose the resolution that suits your use rather than assuming the largest file is always necessary. Available files come from the media variants exposed by the source; they are not necessarily the creator's original camera file. A downloader cannot recover detail removed by compression or promise HD or 4K for every post.

Public access and creator permissions#

TwitterDown's public-link workflow is not a way to unlock protected accounts, private messages, deleted posts, or access restrictions. Do not provide login credentials to a downloader that claims otherwise. Ask the creator for the original file when you have permission but the public link is unavailable.

Being able to save a file does not grant ownership or permission to repost, edit, monetize, or redistribute it. Follow the creator's permissions, applicable copyright rules, and platform terms. A personal-use label or attribution alone is not a guarantee that a use is permitted.
